Project Details
Overview
On this project, MILBURN performed both the interior non-structural demolition as well as the structural demolition package on the Tao Restaurant and Nightclub. The first phase was the selective interior demo — we removed ceilings, flooring, walls, millwork, MEP/FP, kitchen equipment, and dance stages. The second phase included selective structural demolition and shoring. We shored up nearly the entire building, and removed load-bearing brick walls, concrete slabs, exterior fire escapes, steel structural members, steel staircases, and exterior walls.
Our Biggest Challenge
As with many downtown Chicago projects, we had very little room to maneuver on this tight job site. Additionally, the building’s historical status provided challenges as well. The building was constructed in 1892, and over the years has been home to the Chicago Historical Society, recording studios, and other famous nightclubs. Because of this, we needed to make sure we didn’t damage the building’s exterior in any way.
The End Result
This job was completed on schedule in June 2018, after roughly two-and-a-half years of work and over 10,000 man hours on-site. We exported 1,600 tons C&D for recycling, and 97.5% of those materials were recycled or diverted from landfill.
